Over eight years ago, the World Tourism Organization at one of its general assemblies reported that by the year 2020 the tourism industry will grow rapidly. Not only will it become the largest industry in the world, but the largest business in the world, based on research.

The WTO is the agency most dedicated to research and promotion of tourism and is part of the United Nation's development program of the United Nations. The WTO counts with more than 138 nations and 350 government agencies, hotels groups, tour operators and airlines among its members.

Based on the projections made in October 1997, by the year 2020 there will be an estimated 1.6 billion travel arrivals nearly tripling the number of current arrivals. Are we ready for this demand?


With these enormous numbers, it is important to acknowledge that tourism worldwide has the potential to explode. The WTO states tourism is still in its infancy. In the year 2020, the world will be characterized by growth and depth of technology in every aspect which we are currently using to convert it into the art of travel.

With more than 30 years of experience in the travel industry and thinking of its future, we enter a new millennium with all the advances modern technology has to offer. Through the use of such equipment as the telephone, cellular phones, cable television, satellites and satellite dishes, computers, Internet, and all the means of communication in existence, we have created Mayaworld that will fulfill our true objective to make our travel industry state of the art.

At the present time, there is an organization that represents the majority of airlines at the international level and a corporation that regulates travel agencies in the United States . Similarly, there are a number of organizations and societies whose members and business are dedicated to the tourism and travel industry.

Many electronic systems, providers, and Internet servers offering the travel and tourism industry access to hotels, car rentals, tour packages, excursions, cruises, among others, will make small travel agencies or related businesses disappear, because they lack this technology and the low benefit and commission incentives.

Major airlines today have their own reservation systems and offer the consumer frequent flyer plans and special discounts when buying tickets on the Internet. Some providers in the tourism and travel industry also offer miles when using services such as telephone companies and credit cards.

Service providers to travelers and/or tourists especially the airlines should eliminate the great amount of complicated restrictions to purchase tickets, establish a universal system or agreements among themselves and renovate all the outdated and obsolete processes of the last century. To this day, the client or passenger does not have any other alternative but to accept and submit to what the providers of tourism services offer. In a very short time, it is the client or passenger who has to decide what he or she wants.

With these changes, we the providers of services to the traveler, have to accommodate. We will find and agree that the client or in our case, the traveler, tourist or passenger is right. Competition in the travel and tourism industry will reach its maximum limit before 2007. Before that date, the consumer (traveler or tourist) will decide which method to use for travel and vacations opting for the fastest, cheapest, safest and most efficient. They will spend their money and we will fill planes, ships, cars, trains, hotels, vacation and entertainment spots and much more, pleasing them and fulfilling their wishes. Our tourism industry will become the world's best and most lucrative business in the art of travel.

Our future travelers or tourists will experience and enjoy the art of travel. But perhaps more important, is that we who serve and benefit from tourism through small rewards, will change our old and complicated ways to make travel easier. Only that way we will enter the new millennium and enjoy the economic rewards that tourism and the art of travel could offers. Knowing how to sell what the traveler wants will become the new art of the 21st century.
